James Beeks (Athletics)

James is a talented middle-distance runner who finished 3rd at the National 3000m s/s Championship and 3rd in the England Schools Championship. In August he was selected to represent Great Britain under 20 in the Manchester International Event and finished the season ranked 2nd in the UK for 2000m s/c. James also obtained the Basingstoke and Mid Hants AC all-time under 20 record over 2 events.

Terry Brigdale (Karate) NATS

Terry was capped for England at two major competitions in 2017 and took silver at the British Championships. He also won bronze at the English Championships and gold in the team event at the WIKF World Cup. Terry is ranked 71st in the World for -21’s-84kg and 2017 saw him far exceed his goals. He shows great etiquette in and out of the dojo and after being seen training at a Kumite course in Ireland he was invited to the USA to do some private training with the senior world no. 1.

Benjamin Bushnell (Golf)

Benjamin is a member of the England South and Surrey u18 team. He is also a member of the British School and Inter College League where he is a first team member. He placed 4th at the Lee Westwood Golf Tour National Finals Tournament and also won the Surrey County Club Championships. In 2017, Benjamin won a total of 8 tournaments and in all other competitions entered he achieved a top 10 result. He showed himself to be a positive role model by attending all junior competitions and seeing everyone off as well as attending junior coaching sessions.

Morris Dick (Swimming) VET

Morris began 2017 winning four gold medals at the South East Region Masters Championship (50m, 100, 200m and medley teams), and went on to win many more golds throughout the year for breaststroke and men’s medley at the Welsh Open Masters Championships, British Masters Championships and World Masters Championships.   Morris ended the season ranked top in breaststroke for 100m and 200m and was unbeaten in the UK for 2017.

Olly Espinasse (Swimming) VET

Olly was part of the team that won Bronze at the World Masters Championship in Budapest and placed 4th in the Medley relay. The team also set 2 European records in the 4x100m and 4x200m freestyle, and 6 British records on their way to winning National titles. He won 20 plus events across regional and county level and continued to medal individually at national level. He broke two lifetime bests in the 50m breaststroke and 100m butterfly and exceeded all 2017 performance goals.

Robert Etheridge (Brazilian Jiu Jitsu) VET

Robert is the current English Masters Champion for his rank age and weight division, which he has won for the second year running. He also won the Bournemouth open against comers from all over the UK and finished the year as no 1 in his age rank and weight and is very active on the tournament circuit. Rob is a great model within the Basingstoke School of Martial Arts and always sets a great example.

Jim Feighery-Murphy (Karate)

In 2017, Jim won heavyweight bronze at the WIKF World Championship and was also awarded the 2017 Place to be Proud of ‘Sporting Hero’.   Jim has suffered injuries for the last few years and therefore couldn’t train to the level he would like so the bronze at WIKF was a particular highlight of 2017. Jim is an inspiration to the squad with his ‘can do’ attitude and always trains to the max.

Liam Hignett (Tennis)

Liam was an Aegon British Tour Quart-Finalist at both Tunbridge Wells and Exeter, U18 Winter Tour National Quarter-Finalist in Bath, and Men’s and 18u County Champion. He was also Aegon British Tour Tier 3 Champion and was the Number 1 Junior and no 2 Men’s player in the County. Liam captained his school team to the National Schools Championships and finished as Most Valuable Player in the Hampshire and IOW Summer Doubles League.

Kevin McAuslan-Crine (Karate) VET

2017 saw Kevin win gold medals in both Vets Kata and Kumite at the WIKF World Championships along with becoming British Champion for Vets Kata at the WIKF British Championships. Kevin exceeded his 2017 goals, despite being ill for most of the summer, and is an inspiration to his students though his textbook fighting examples and commitment.

Neil Mitchell (Swimming) VET

Neil competed at the European Master Championships and finished top 20 in all events entered. He obtained his first two individual medals at British National Master Championships and won countless medals across the Regional and National swimming Championships. Neil exceeded all his performance objectives for 2017 and continued to improve all his PB’s in the majority of events in which he competed.

Owen Richardson (Athletics) NATS

Owen is a member of both Team GB and the England squad, and is ranked UK No. 1 for 400m u20. He won gold for England Seniors in Bratislava for 400m indoors and went on to win both indoor and outdoor National u20 Championships for 400m. Owen competed for Team GB in the 400m, and 4x400m relay, at the Mannheim International, European U20 Championships and Loughborough International. His 400m PB of 46.49s saw him also establish a No. 5 European U20 ranking and No. 9 Senior UK ranking.

Bradley Sutton (Modern Pentathlon) NATS

Bradley is a UK Sport Podium Potential Athlete based at the GB National Training Centre in Bath. He achieved gold at the National Tetrathlon and silver at the National Pentathlon. In 2017 he reached the final of the European Championships in Barcelona and competed at a number of age up Senior competitions including as a member of the Senior mixed relay squad. Bradley spent much of the spring and summer at a number of international competitions both as a junior and senior to gain the necessary experience to begin 2018.

Spencer Turner (Swimming) VET

Spencer was part of the team that won Bronze at the World Masters Championship in Budapest and placed 4th in the Medley relay. The team also set 2 European records in the 4x100m and 4x200m freestyle, and 6 British records on their way to winning National titles. Spencer individually achieved world 5th in the 200m freestyle along with lifetime personals bests throughout the year. He was also Hampshire Champion in 10 events and helped Basingstoke win team trophy for the 8th consecutive year.

Matt Wright (Triathlon, Swimming)

In 2017, Matt raced at both the World Age-Group Sprint Triathlon Championships where he finished 16th overall in the 25-29 age group. At the World Masters Swimming Championships where he raced in the 800m freestyle, 200m individual medley and 100m butterfly events and finished in the top 25 in his age for all three events and achieved PB’s. He finished on podium level at multiple races in the UK and is an active member of Savage Tri Club, Basingstoke Bluefins and Oakley Pedalers.

Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council in partnership with the Local Sports Council provide a grant scheme to assist sportsmen and women in their efforts to achieve full National, International and Olympic honours. Grants are available to provided assistance with travelling and coaching expenses, qualifications, equipment and clothing requirements.

Applications for grant aid are welcome annually between 1st September and 6th December annually with applicants being at least County Standard or equivalent within their sport and priority will be given to those performing at the higher National and International levels. Applications must be fully supported by the coach and club of the applicant and also include any other additional information that would support the grant application e.g. Press Releases.

Applicants for Grant Aid are automatically considered for the Basingstoke & Deane Annual Sports Awards and for scholarship support from the Basingstoke Sports Trust or Aquadrome.
