Diet & Nutrition

A planned diet is a must for top sports people and is a major part of their training programme.

The correct diet will also give you better skin and it is the easiest way to control your weight.

Only a handful of us are food specialists so it's easy to get confused about the issue.

But if you read our guide to the basic facts you'll know all you need to about eating healthily.

Most people in the know, who specialise in food, strongly recommend eating a balanced diet.

The food we eat should contain a number of essential items, they are:

  • Carbohydrates
  • Fats
  • Protein
  • Vitamins
  • Minerals
  • Fibre
  • Water

    An easy way to work out what a balanced diet is to think about it as a pyramid.

    You select correct amounts of food from the different levels of the pyramid.

  • Carbohydrates

    Carbohydrates (which some people call carbs) provide up to 70% of our body's energy.

    They are the body's major energy source.

    You can find them in bread, cereals (wheat, corn, rice, oats), and veggies like potatoes, as well as from fruit.

    Most of the carbs you need come from foods in levels two and three in the food pyramid.

    If you pig out on to many carbs your body wont be able toproduce energy from all of it so the excess gets stored in the body as fat.

    Proteins

    Protein is essential for developing muscles, bones, skin, tendons and the body's organs.

    They are the building blocks of the body repairing and replacing damaged tissue.

    A good balanced diet should have sufficient protein.

    An athlete's diet should have about 15% protein in it.

    If you over-eat on foods packed with protein any excess will either be excreted or changed into fat.

    Proteins can be found in eggs, fish, meat, poultry, nuts, peas and lentils. Most of the protein you need comes from level three in the pyramid.

    Protein's biggest job is to build up, maintain and replace the tissues in your body
    Dairy products like cheese, milk, and yogurt are good sources of protein
