With such a diverse number of sports within Basingstoke & Deane competing at a wide range of levels, nominations for these awards are strong and difficult to establish a clear winner. A panel of judges will now decide who gets the invites to the Apollo awards in February 2018.
 

Junior Team Award 2017 Nominations

 

Basingstoke Academy of Dancing

Basingstoke Academy of Dancing qualified to Dance World Cup Finals in Germany where they came 4th in section of 16 dances. This earned points for Team England and helped them gain the Junior Dance World Cup and Overall Dance World Cup 2017. The team worked extremely hard to rehearse for the world competition and were a credit to take abroad. While in Germany they also took part in International Masterclasses and made friends with many international dancers.

Basingstoke Kickboxing Organisation

The BKO team dedicated themselves to training and competing with most of the squad training 3-5 times a week and traveling long distances to raise their standard and achieve their goals. The team’s attitude has been one of commitment and support for each other and up and coming members of the club. 2017 goals were to compete at the highest levels and place in major international tournaments and the team have exceeded these expectations. BKO also have members in the British team and are aiming for places in the World championships next year. The Team have also shown their support for the club through fund raising and demonstrations.

Basingstoke School of Martial Arts (Brazilian Jiu Jitsu)

The team has been running for 5 years now and in 2017 had some major achievements. The team won multiple gold medals at the National Championships, British Championships and European Championships. They also became Bournemouth Open Team Champions and won hundreds of medals at small local competitions. The team work incredibly hard and always set an example; shaking opponents hands at the start and end of each match, win or lose.

Basingstoke U11’s District Football Team

2017 saw the Under 11 schools side exceed all expectations. Not only did they become the first ever Basingstoke District Schools side at any age group to win the Hampshire League but they were also County Champions in the ESFA u11 Danone Nations Cup, runners up in the Regional event in the ESFA u11 Danone Nations Cup and qualified, out of group, for the National Finals in the ESFA competitions. The season saw many dominant displays and a highlight was playing on the premier league pitch at Stoke City in the National Final of ESFA competition where they reached the semi -finals.

St Marys CE Junior School (Table Tennis)

In the National School Team Championship, they won both the Basingstoke and Hampshire County Team School finals in the girls Under 11 team event and qualified for the zonal finals in London in Jan 2018. The after-school club is run once a week for 1 hour and the playing conditions are limited, playing on half sized tables or on desks in the classroom. In a short space of time, the girls exceeded their goals and expectations. They played fairly in the finals and helped other teams to score, and both umpired and corrected the scores even when the points were awarded to them incorrectly. The team played as one unit and motivated each other to ensure they played to the best of their ability at all times.

St Mary’s CE Junior School (Multisport)

The School was represented at 12 level 3 competitions across a broad range of sports with top 6 placings in each. At Level 2, they participated in 28 competitions achieving a total of 24 medals with 111 pupils competing, and they reached 10 County Finals across all year groups. Level 2 successes included winning indoor Athletics, Cross Country, Netball, Football, Quadkids, Football, Kwikcricket, Tennis, Basketball and Table Tennis. Inter-form competitions were developed, including Howler and Javelin Throw, Skipping Challenge, Mixed Football Tournament and Yr6 Javelin and Chest Push Throw. The year of sport was rounded up with a successful Sports Day where the children demonstrated fantastic sportsmanship throughout the

Winklebury Junior School (Sports Hall Athletics)

Winklebury Junior School Athletics team finished the sports hall athletics as runners up in Basingstoke and the 14th best school in Hampshire. Their commitment and passion during each round of the competition, and practices, kept building and they were supportive of each other and respectful to others. They smashed their personal bests and their commitment was outstanding. They came into school at 8am to train and practice and the opportunity to compete at the Basingstoke finals was the first time they had ever qualified for the next round of any competition which was an amazing achievement and well deserved.
